چکیده

This paper presents an efficient sharp interface model to study the morphological transformations of misfit particles in phase separated alloys. Both the elastic anisotropy and interfacial energy are considered. The geometry of the material interface is implicitly described by the level set method so that the complex morphological transformation of microstructures can be accurately captured. A smoothed extended finite element method is adopted to evaluate the elastic field without requiring remeshing. The equilibrium morphologies of particles are shown to depend on the elastic anisotropy, interfacial energy as well as the particle size. Various morphological transformations, such as shape changes from spheres to cuboids, directional aligned platelets and particle splitting, are observed. The simulated results are in good agreement with experimental observations. The proposed model provides a useful tool in understanding the morphological transformation of precipitates, which will facilitate the analysis and design of metallic alloys. & 2013 Elsevier Ltd. A hybrid smoothed extended finite element/level set method for modeling equilibrium shapes of nano-inhomogeneities

Interfacial energy plays an important role in equilibrium morphologies of nanosized microstructures of solid materials due to the high interface-to-volume ratio, and can no longer be neglected as it does in conventional mechanics analysis. The present work develops an effective numerical approach by means of a hybrid smoothed extended finite element/level set method to model nanoscale inhomogen...

Coherency strain and the kinetics of phase separation in LiFePO4 nanoparticles.

A theoretical investigation of the effects of elastic coherency strain on the thermodynamics, kinetics, and morphology of intercalation in single LiFePO(4) nanoparticles yields new insights into this important battery material. Anisotropic elastic stiffness and misfit strains lead to the unexpected prediction that low-energy phase boundaries occur along {101} planes, while conflicting reports o...

A Multi Plane Model for Natural Anisotropy of Sand

Anisotropy of sand is mainly due to the geometrical arrangement of particles that depends on the orientation of applied load respect to the bedding plane. It is geologically due to micro-fabric created by the arrangement of the particles configured during deposition. Most of the models develop using stress/strain invariants are not capable of identifying this kind of anisotropy. This is mainly ...

A curvature-dependent interfacial energy-based interface stress theory and its applications to nano-structured materials_ (I) General theory

Experimental observations have shown the size-dependent residual surface stresses on spherical nanoparticles and their influence on the effective modulus of heterogeneous nanostructures. Based on these experimental findings, this paper proposes a new interface stress theory that considers the curvature effect on the interfacial energy. To investigate this curvature-dependent interfacial energy,...

Two- and three-dimensional equilibrium morphology of a misfitting particle and the Gibbs–Thomson effect

The equilibrium shapes of misfitting precipitates in elastically anisotropic systems are obtained in both two and three dimensions, and the corresponding Gibbs–Thomson equation is derived as a function of the characteristic ratio between elastic and interfacial energies, L 0. The effect of elastic inhomogeneity is investigated systematically. For soft or moderately hard particles, the stable eq...
